A screen room is the one thing that reliably gives the evenings back through mosquito season, which here runs most of the year. The enclosures in these photos keep out insects, pollen and windblown debris while the space stays open to the air and the view, with screen doors and pet-resistant mesh where the family needed them. What a screen room will not do is cool the air, so most sit under a solid or insulated roof. If there is a pool on the lot, the walls and doors can change the pool barrier; the patio enclosures page explains what to plan for.

Planning notes

Before You Screen In a Patio

  • Know what a screen room does. It keeps out mosquitoes, pollen and blowing debris while staying open to the breeze. It doesn’t cool the air, so most sit under a solid or insulated roof.
  • Choose the details. Screen doors and pet-resistant mesh can be built in where the family needs them.
  • Check the pool barrier. If there is a pool on the lot, new walls and doors can change the pool barrier, so it is planned as part of the design.
