The kitchens that get used are the ones planned with the shade, the seating and the gas run together, not added to a patio afterwards. Islands here are stone or stucco with granite, quartz or concrete tops, sized around what the family actually cooks, from a built-in grill and side burner to a smoker, pizza oven, fridge and sink. Gas, water and power are run from the house and permitted, and most sit under a cover so they work in August sun and a spring storm. More on appliances and what drives the cost is on the outdoor kitchens page.
Before You Plan an Outdoor Kitchen
- Start with how you cook. The island is sized around what the family actually uses, from a built-in grill and side burner to a smoker, pizza oven, fridge and sink.
- Plan the utilities with it. Gas, water and power are run from the house and permitted, which is far easier to design in than to add later.
- Put it under cover. A kitchen in full August sun rarely gets used. Most are built under a patio cover so they work through summer heat and spring storms.
Every project starts with a free design visit to measure, talk through options and give a firm price. A designer calls within one business day.
