Which Siding Actually Survives a Texas Year

Spring hail, a summer heat run, then a hard freeze before Christmas. A North Texas year asks four different things of a wall. Here is how each material answers.

The question people ask is which siding is best. The better question is which siding is best at the specific abuse this metroplex hands out, because a material that would last a lifetime in Oregon can have a short and unhappy career in Rockwall. A North Texas year runs hail, then heat, then a freeze, and each of those stresses a wall in a different direction.

The four things a North Texas year asks of a wall

Before comparing materials, it is worth being specific about what they are being compared against. Around here a wall gets asked to do four separate jobs, and they arrive in order.

  1. Take an impact, in spring. North Texas sits in one of the country’s more active hail corridors, and the season runs from early spring into early summer. The relevant property is impact resistance, and it varies by material and by temperature.
  2. Handle heat and movement, all summer. A long stretch of triple-digit afternoons — 2023 is the run most people here remember — puts real expansion into cladding and real ultraviolet load onto its color.
  3. Survive a hard freeze, occasionally. February 2021 and the freeze just before Christmas in 2022 both did visible damage to exteriors across the metroplex. Cold changes how materials respond to everything else.
  4. Shed wind-driven rain, year round. Storms here arrive sideways. Water gets pushed up under laps and into any gap at a corner, trim piece or window head.

Notice that only one of those four is about the material’s toughness in isolation. Three of them are about how it is detailed and installed. That is the honest headline of this whole subject.

How the three real options compare

These are the materials we actually install and repair across the metroplex. Wood and aluminum still exist on older homes here, and we deal with both, but almost nobody chooses them new.

Most DFW houses are a mix. The siding decision is often only about gables, dormers and side elevations.

The truth about hail resistance

Every few springs someone in this market starts advertising hail-proof siding. There is no such thing. Hail arrives at a range of sizes, speeds and angles, sometimes driven by sixty-mile-an-hour wind, and at some point on that range every cladding sold fails. What materials genuinely differ in is how they fail and how easy the failure is to put right.

Vinyl cracks and punches through — obvious damage, easy to spot, straightforward to replace a run if the color is still made. Aluminum dents and keeps the dent, which is cosmetic but permanent. Fiber cement resists puncture better than either but can chip at an edge or fracture on a direct hit, and each damaged board is its own repair. Insulated vinyl sits in the middle: the foam backing supports the panel face, so a strike that would flex a bare panel past its limit often does not.

The far more useful point is that hail here is directional. One storm, one or two elevations. If a contractor writes you a whole-house quote the morning after a storm without walking each wall, ask which elevations were actually struck.

What your part of the metroplex changes

Two things vary meaningfully by where you are, and neither has anything to do with the product brochure.

How much siding you actually have

In the post-2000 subdivisions — Wylie, Little Elm, Prosper, Celina, much of Frisco — the front is brick or stone and the siding is confined to gables, dormers and the sides. A premium material on a small area is a very different decision from a premium material on a whole house. In the older frame stock, like Haltom City’s post-war homes or the 1960s and 1970s ranches through Hurst and Garland, the siding is the entire exterior and the math changes completely.

Shade, sun and mature trees

Celina’s newer lots sit on open prairie with almost no canopy, so a west wall there takes the full afternoon every day of the summer. Bedford, Duncanville and Richardson have fifty-year-old trees, and a shaded wall ages far more slowly — while also staying damp longer after rain, which matters for anything organic. Sun exposure is the single biggest driver of how fast a color goes, and it varies street to street.

Why the crew matters more than the material

We can say this cleanly because we install all three: the gap between a well-installed budget product and a badly installed premium one is not close. The premium one loses.

  • Nailing. Vinyl has to hang. Nails centered in the slot, not driven tight, so the panel slides as it expands. A tightly nailed wall waves in August and unlocks eventually.
  • Gaps at trim. Panels get a deliberate gap at corner posts and channels, and the gap changes with the temperature on the day of install. Butted tight in January, a wall has nowhere to go in July.
  • Flashing, not caulk. Window heads, roof-to-wall junctions, deck ledgers and every penetration get flashed. Sealant is a maintenance item, not a water barrier, and every leak we open up was somebody trusting it as one.
  • Kickout flashing. Where a roof edge meets a wall, a kickout diverts the runoff out onto the roof instead of behind the siding. It is a small piece of metal and it is behind a large share of the rotten sheathing we find.
  • Cut ends on fiber cement. Factory-finished boards are sealed on the face; the cut end is not. Sealed properly, the board lasts. Left raw against a trim piece, it drinks.
  • The water-resistive barrier. Continuous, lapped shingle-style so water runs down and out, and integrated with the window flashing rather than taped over it as an afterthought.

A short way to choose

If the honest goal is a completely new exterior for the least money, and the house is largely brick with siding on the gables, non-insulated vinyl installed properly is a sound answer and always has been.

If you want the wall to feel more solid, hold straighter lines, take dents and impacts better and take the edge off outside noise, insulated siding is the upgrade that actually delivers something you notice — though not primarily as an energy product, which is a separate conversation.

If you want the texture and shadow line of painted wood, the option to change color later, and the most durable board available, fiber cement is the premium choice and holds its factory color well in this sun. It costs more to buy and more to install, and it is worth it on a house you intend to keep.

The bottom line

Each of the three materials survives a North Texas year when it is installed by someone who understands what the year does. Fiber cement is the most weather-indifferent, insulated vinyl is the best-supported panel, and plain vinyl is the most cost-effective path to a whole new exterior. None of them is hail-proof, all of them are ruined by bad flashing, and every one of them lasts longer on a shaded elevation than on a west-facing one.

Fiber cement is the most dimensionally stable in heat and holds factory color well in this sun. Insulated vinyl handles heat better than plain vinyl because the rigid backing keeps the panel flat. Plain vinyl performs fine in heat too, but only if it was hung loose enough to expand — heat exposes a tight install rather than damaging the product.

No. Hail comes in a range of sizes and speeds, and every cladding sold has a point where it fails. What differs is how it fails and how repairable it is. Vinyl cracks and can be replaced panel by panel, aluminum dents permanently, and fiber cement resists puncture but can chip or fracture at a direct hit.

The cold itself is not the problem. The risk is water absorbed into an unsealed cut end or an unflashed joint, which then freezes. Installed with cut ends sealed and joints flashed per the manufacturer, fiber cement came through both the February 2021 and December 2022 freezes without material trouble.

Dark colors run hotter on a south or west elevation and work harder against ultraviolet light, so they show change sooner than light colors on the same wall. Current product lines hold color far better than the vinyl people remember from the 1980s, and some are specifically engineered for dark shades — worth asking for if a dark exterior is the goal.

Yes, and most DFW homes already do — brick or stone on the front with siding on the gables and sides. Mixing is normal and can be the sensible way to put a premium material where it is seen and a cost-effective one where it is not. What matters is that the transitions between materials are flashed properly.

Walk every elevation first. Hail here is directional and often hits only one or two walls, so a matched repair may be the honest answer. Do not wait, though, on cracks or punctures — those let water to the sheathing, and a wet wall is a far larger bill than a repaired panel.
